You can tip before or after tax, and no Canadian law says which. Tipping on the after-tax total costs more by your tip rate multiplied by the tax. On an $80.00 Ontario meal, an 18% tip is $14.40 on the subtotal and $16.27 on the total.
Below are the numbers by province, a fix for receipts that show only a total, and the tax rules for businesses that receive tips. I confirmed each rate against canada.ca, Revenu Québec and the provincial finance ministries on 21 September 2026.
Should you tip before or after tax?
It is your choice. A common argument for the pre-tax subtotal is that sales tax goes to the government, not to the business or the server. Others tip on the total because it is the number at the bottom of the bill.
Either way, the gap is small and predictable. Multiply your tip rate by the tax on the bill. On $10.40 of tax, an 18% tip costs $1.87 more on the total.
Tipping 18% on the $90.40 total instead gives a $16.27 tip and $106.67 paid.
What the difference looks like by province
The table uses an $80.00 restaurant meal and an 18% tip. It shows the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on restaurant food. It also shows Provincial Sales Tax (PST), Manitoba’s Retail Sales Tax (RST) and the Quebec Sales Tax (QST) where they apply.
The last column is how much more the tip costs when you tip on the total.
| Province and tax | Tax on $80.00 | 18% tip on subtotal | 18% tip on total | Extra cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AB · BC · territories: 5% GST | $4.00 | $14.40 | $15.12 | $0.72 |
| SK: 5% GST + 6% PST | $8.80 | $14.40 | $15.98 | $1.58 |
| MB: 5% GST + 7% RST | $9.60 | $14.40 | $16.13 | $1.73 |
| ON: 13% HST | $10.40 | $14.40 | $16.27 | $1.87 |
| NS: 14% HST | $11.20 | $14.40 | $16.42 | $2.02 |
| QC: 5% GST + 9.975% QST | $11.98 | $14.40 | $16.56 | $2.16 |
| NB · NL · PE: 15% HST | $12.00 | $14.40 | $16.56 | $2.16 |
In British Columbia, restaurant food carries only the 5% GST. Pop and other sweetened carbonated drinks add 7% PST, and alcohol adds 10% PST. A $60.00 meal with $20.00 of wine comes to $86.00, and an 18% tip is $1.08 higher on that total.
What if the receipt only shows the total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate to get the subtotal. In Ontario, $90.40 ÷ 1.13 = $80.00. In Quebec, divide by 1.14975.
The reverse sales tax calculator does this for any province and shows each tax on its own line. How to reverse calculate sales tax walks through the maths.
Tip screens and card terminals
Some card terminals calculate suggested tip percentages on the total including tax. The screen shows a percentage, so the dollar amount can go unnoticed. If you want to tip on the subtotal, choose the custom amount option and enter it yourself.
If you run the business, check your terminal settings or ask your payment provider which amount the percentages use.
How tips are taxed if you run the business
A voluntary tip is generally not subject to GST or HST. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) treats a freely given tip as separate from the price of what you sold.
A mandatory tip is different. An automatic gratuity added to the bill, such as 18% for large parties, is part of the price. You generally must charge GST or HST on it.
The Tax Court of Canada upheld this in 2022. In 1410109 Ontario Ltd. v. The King (2022 TCC 141), a banquet hall’s mandatory 15% gratuity was ruled subject to 13% HST. Provincial sales taxes can treat service charges differently, so check your province’s rules before adding one.
Frequently asked questions
Is it rude to tip on the pre-tax amount? No rule or law requires tipping on the total. Tipping on the subtotal means your percentage applies to the food and service, not the tax.
Do I pay GST on my tip? Generally no. A voluntary tip is not subject to GST or HST. An automatic gratuity on the bill generally is, and the business should charge tax on it.
How much more does tipping after tax cost? Multiply the tip rate by the tax. An 18% tip on a bill with $10.40 of tax costs $1.87 more on the after-tax total.
How you tip is your choice, but how a business taxes a service charge is set by law. Verify anything you are filing against canada.ca and your provincial revenue agency. This is not tax advice.
Only have the receipt total? The reverse sales tax calculator splits it into the pre-tax amount and each tax, so you can tip on the subtotal. For every province’s rate, see the 2026 rate card.
