Sales tax across Canada, in one place

Every province and territory starts from the same 5% federal GST. What differs is what the province adds on top, and how.

Harmonized provinces fold the provincial portion into a single HST rate. You calculate one number and show one tax line.

Separate-tax provinces charge a provincial tax alongside GST. British Columbia and Saskatchewan call it PST, Manitoba calls it RST, and Quebec calls it QST. In all of them, both taxes are calculated on the price before tax and appear as two lines.

No-provincial-tax jurisdictions — Alberta and the three territories — charge only the GST.

The rate depends on the customer, not on you

The most common mistake for a business selling across provinces is charging your own province’s rate. In most cases, the rate is set by where the supply is made. The CRA’s place-of-supply rules are the authority, and they treat goods, services, and real property differently.

Reverse calculation

Working backwards from a tax-included total is a separate calculation, and a common one: reconciling a receipt, splitting an expense, or pricing so the total lands on a round number. Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. The reverse calculator does it for any province.

Common questions

What is the sales tax in Canada?

A 5% federal GST applies across the country. On top of that, some provinces charge a separate provincial tax, and others combine both into a single HST. Pick your province above for the exact rate.

What's the difference between GST, HST, PST, QST and RST?

GST is the federal tax. HST is a single combined federal-plus-provincial tax. PST, QST and RST are separate provincial taxes charged alongside GST, and the different names reflect different provincial legislation.

Which province has the lowest sales tax?

Alberta and the three territories charge only the 5% federal GST, with no provincial sales tax.

Which tax do I charge a customer in another province?

Generally the rate for the province where the supply is made, not where your business is located. The CRA's place-of-supply rules cover goods, services and real property separately.

Are groceries taxed in Canada?

Basic groceries are zero-rated for GST/HST everywhere in Canada, which means no tax applies. Prepared foods and restaurant meals are generally taxable.
