HST on Prince Edward Island

PEI is a participating province, so the provincial portion is harmonized into a single HST rate collected and administered by the CRA. One rate, one tax line, one return.

A note for seasonal and tourism businesses

A large share of PEI’s small businesses are seasonal, and tax questions cluster around two things: pricing so a tax-included total lands on a round number, and splitting accommodation bills that carry more than just HST.

Accommodation is the common case. Charlottetown and Summerside each levy a municipal Tourism Accommodation Levy on top of the HST, charged on the accommodation portion of the bill. Summerside exempts establishments under ten rooms; Charlottetown applies its levy to every tourism establishment regardless of size, and both exempt long stays of roughly a month or more. Charlottetown has also moved to raise its rate, so confirm the current figure with the city rather than reusing last season’s. Those levies are not sales taxes, they are outside what this calculator covers, and the HST still applies to the room rate underneath.

For the first case, reverse calculation is the tool. Enter the round total you want the customer to pay, and the calculator tells you the pre-tax price to quote.

Regional rates no longer match

If you operate across the Maritimes, note that the rates diverged when Nova Scotia lowered its provincial portion on April 1, 2025. A single saved rate for “the Maritimes” will now produce a wrong number for one province.

Common questions

How do I calculate HST on PEI?

Multiply the price before tax by 0.15. A $100 item comes to $115.

How do I get the pre-tax price from a PEI total?

Divide the total by 1.15. On a $115 total, the price was $100 and the HST was $15.

Does PEI charge the same rate as Nova Scotia?

Not since April 1, 2025, when Nova Scotia lowered its provincial portion to reach 14%. PEI, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador remain at 15%.

Do tourism businesses charge anything on top of HST?

Yes, in Charlottetown and Summerside. Both charge a municipal Tourism Accommodation Levy on top of the HST. Summerside exempts establishments under ten rooms, and both exempt stays of about a month or longer. Those levies aren't sales taxes and aren't included in this calculator.
