GST only

Yukon charges no territorial sales tax, so most purchases carry just the 5% federal GST. That makes the arithmetic simple and makes the reverse calculation the more useful one: when a price is quoted tax-included, dividing by 1 plus the rate recovers the pre-tax figure.

Selling south

Yukon businesses selling to customers in the provinces run into the harder problem. The rate generally follows the place of supply, so a sale delivered to a British Columbia customer is treated under BC’s rules, not Yukon’s. If you ship or deliver outside the territory regularly, the province switcher above is the fast way to check what to charge.

Freight and the landed cost

Shipping costs are a larger share of a purchase here than almost anywhere else in the country. When delivery is bundled into a single price for the goods, it is generally treated as part of that supply and taxed the same way. A separately billed delivery charge is not automatically part of the goods: the CRA looks at whether the two are really one supply, and section 138 of the Excise Tax Act only folds an incidental supply into another when both are provided for a single consideration. Budget from the landed total, not the sticker price.

Common questions

Does Yukon have a sales tax?

No territorial sales tax. Most purchases carry only the 5% federal GST.

How do I find the GST inside a Yukon total?

Divide the total by 1.05. On a $105 total, the GST is $5.

What do I charge a customer in BC or Alberta?

Generally the rate of the province where the supply is made. A sale delivered to a BC customer typically carries GST plus BC's PST, not Yukon's GST-only treatment.

Is freight taxable?

When delivery is included in a single price for the goods, it is generally taxed along with them. A separately billed delivery charge is judged on its own facts. Either way it matters a lot when shipping north.
