GST only
Nunavut levies no territorial sales tax. Most purchases carry the 5% federal GST and nothing else, which makes this the simplest sales-tax jurisdiction in Canada to calculate.
Freight is the real number
The rate is simple; the base often isn’t. Sealift and air freight make delivery a large share of what goods actually cost here. When delivery is bundled into a single price for the goods, it is generally treated as part of that supply and taxed the same way. A separately billed delivery charge is not automatically part of the goods: the CRA looks at whether the two are really one supply, and section 138 of the Excise Tax Act only folds an incidental supply into another when both are provided for a single consideration. When you’re budgeting a shipment or quoting a client, calculate tax on the landed total rather than on the item price.
Selling to the south
Nunavut businesses invoicing customers in the provinces generally apply the rate where the supply is made, which can mean a harmonized rate or a provincial tax alongside GST. The province switcher above is the quick check.
Reverse calculation
Enter a tax-included total and the calculator returns the price before tax and the GST inside it. This is the calculation that comes up when reconciling receipts against your books.

Common questions
Does Nunavut have a sales tax?
No territorial sales tax. Most purchases carry only the 5% federal GST.
How do I calculate GST in Nunavut?
Multiply the pre-tax price by 0.05. To work backwards, divide the total by 1.05.
Are shipping and freight charges taxed?
When delivery is included in a single price for the goods, it is generally taxed along with them. A separately billed charge is judged on its own facts. With sealift and air freight, either way it is a substantial part of the total.
What rate do I charge a customer in another province?
Generally the rate where the supply is made. Check the CRA's place-of-supply rules, which treat goods, services and real property differently.
