How BC’s two taxes work
British Columbia charges the federal GST and a separate provincial sales tax. Both are calculated on the price before tax, and neither is applied on top of the other, so the combined burden is simply the two rates added together. On a receipt they appear as two lines.
PST is not a value-added tax
This is the part that catches businesses moving from an HST province. GST is a value-added tax: if you’re registered, you claim input tax credits on the GST you pay, so it flows through your business rather than landing on it. PST generally doesn’t work that way. For most purchasers, it is an unrecoverable cost that belongs in your pricing, not just your tax filing.
Different taxes, different exemption lists
GST and PST are administered by different governments with different rules, so a purchase can easily carry one and not the other. Some services are subject to PST, and some goods are exempt from it while still carrying GST. Budget 2026 proposed extending PST to accounting, architectural, engineering, geoscience, non-residential real estate and security services, but the province announced on September 18, 2026 that the expansion is paused. Those services are not currently subject to PST.
Backing tax out of a total
Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate to get the price before tax, then calculate each tax separately from that figure. The calculator does this and shows both lines, which is what you want when you’re splitting a tax-included receipt into the right accounts.

Common questions
How do I calculate GST and PST in BC?
Each tax is calculated on the price before tax and the two are added. On a $100 item that's $5 GST and $7 PST, for $112. Neither is charged on top of the other.
How do I calculate tax backwards in BC?
Divide the total by 1.12 to get the price before tax. Switch the calculator to Reverse and enter the total.
Is BC's PST a value-added tax like GST?
No. PST is a retail sales tax, so businesses generally cannot recover it the way they claim input tax credits for GST. That makes it a real cost rather than a pass-through.
Does PST apply to everything GST applies to?
No. The two taxes have different exemption lists, so plenty of purchases carry GST but not PST. Check the province's exemption bulletins when it matters.
Is PST higher on alcohol?
A higher PST rate applies to liquor. The calculator uses the general rate.
