Why Alberta is different

Alberta is the only province without a provincial sales tax. Most purchases carry only the federal GST, which makes it the simplest jurisdiction in the country to calculate — and the one where the reverse calculation is most likely to be what you actually need, since a tax-included total is easy to work backwards from.

Selling to customers in other provinces

The simplicity ends at the border. If you’re an Alberta business selling to customers elsewhere, the rate you charge generally depends on where the supply is made, not where you’re based. A sale delivered to an Ontario customer is typically taxed at Ontario’s rate, not Alberta’s. The CRA’s place-of-supply rules set out how this works, and they differ for goods, services, and real property. Use the province switcher above to check another province’s rate.

Accommodation and other levies

GST isn’t quite the whole story for every purchase. Short-term accommodation also carries the Alberta Tourism Levy, which rose from 4% to 6% on April 1, 2026 as part of Budget 2026, and some municipalities add a destination marketing fee on top. Levies like these are not sales taxes and are outside what this calculator covers.

Common questions

Does Alberta have a provincial sales tax?

No. Alberta is the only province with no provincial sales tax, so most purchases carry just the 5% federal GST.

How do I calculate GST in Alberta?

Multiply the price before tax by 0.05. A $100 item comes to $105.

How do I find the GST inside a total?

Divide the total by 1.05 to get the price before tax. The remainder is the GST. On a $105 total, the GST is $5.

What tax do I charge an Alberta customer if my business is elsewhere?

It depends on the place-of-supply rules, which generally look at where the supply is made rather than where your business is based. Check the CRA's place-of-supply rules.

Is there tax on hotel stays in Alberta?

Short-term accommodation carries GST plus the 6% Alberta Tourism Levy, and some municipalities add their own fee. The calculator handles GST only.
