How Ontario’s HST works
Ontario adopted the Harmonized Sales Tax on July 1, 2010: a single combined tax of 13%, made up of the 5% federal portion and an 8% provincial portion. Because it is harmonized, you calculate and show one number rather than two separate tax lines.
That is the practical difference from provinces like British Columbia or Quebec, where two taxes are calculated separately and appear as two lines on a receipt. In Ontario, the CRA asks that invoices show the total HST rate rather than splitting the federal and provincial portions.
Adding tax
Multiply the price before tax by the HST rate, then add the result to the price.
Backing tax out of a total
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. The result is the price before tax, and the remainder is the HST. This is the calculation that comes up most often when you’re reconciling a tax-included receipt against a bookkeeping entry, or working out what to invoice so a client’s total lands on a round number.
Where the rate doesn’t apply
Not every purchase carries the full rate. Basic groceries are zero-rated across Canada, so no GST/HST applies to them. Ontario also provides point-of-sale rebates on certain items — printed books, children’s clothing and footwear, children’s car seats, diapers, qualifying food and beverages, and newspapers — where the retailer collects only the 5% federal portion and credits the 8% provincial portion back to you at the till. The calculator applies the standard rate, so check whether an exemption or rebate applies before relying on the number for filing.

Common questions
How do I calculate HST in Ontario?
Multiply the price before tax by 0.13 to get the HST, then add it to the price. A $100 item comes to $113. The calculator above does both steps as you type.
How do I calculate tax backwards from a total in Ontario?
Divide the total by 1.13 to get the price before tax. The difference between the two is the HST. Switch the calculator to Reverse and enter the total.
How much HST is in $100 in Ontario?
If $100 is the total including tax, about $88.50 was the price and about $11.50 was HST. If $100 is the price before tax, the HST is $13 and the total is $113.
Is Ontario HST one tax or two?
One. HST is a single combined tax, and the CRA asks that you show the total HST rate on an invoice rather than splitting out the federal and provincial parts.
Do I have to charge HST as a freelancer in Ontario?
Generally once your taxable revenue passes the small-supplier threshold over four consecutive calendar quarters. Below it, registration is optional. Check the CRA's registration rules for your situation.
