Nova Scotia’s rate changed recently

Nova Scotia uses the Harmonized Sales Tax, a single combined tax covering both the federal and provincial portions. The detail that matters here is recency: on April 1, 2025 the Government of Nova Scotia decreased the provincial portion to 9%, bringing the combined rate to 14% from the 15% that applied before. If you’re checking an older receipt, a contract signed before the change, or a spreadsheet template you haven’t touched in a while, the rate may not match.

The CRA published transitional rules for the change, covering personal property, services, housing and other real property. They generally hinge on when an amount became due or was paid rather than when the invoice was written, so a job straddling the change date isn’t necessarily all at one rate.

Everyday calculation

Multiply the price before tax by the rate to add tax. Divide the total by 1 plus the rate to work backwards from a tax-included figure. HST is one tax, so you show a single tax line, and the CRA asks that invoices display the total HST rate rather than splitting the federal and provincial parts.

The calculator above always uses the current rate. For a historical calculation, use the rate that was in effect on the relevant date.

Common questions

Did Nova Scotia's HST rate change?

Yes. On April 1, 2025 the province decreased the provincial portion of the HST to 9%, bringing the combined rate to 14%. Anything calculated before that date used the old 15% rate.

How do I calculate HST in Nova Scotia?

Multiply the price before tax by 0.14, then add it to the price. A $100 item comes to $114.

How do I back HST out of a Nova Scotia total?

Divide the total by 1.14. The result is the price before tax and the difference is the HST.

Which rate applies to an invoice that spans the rate change?

The CRA published transitional rules covering exactly this. They turn on when the amount became due or was paid, not on when you issued the invoice.
