How HST works in New Brunswick

New Brunswick is a participating province, meaning the provincial sales tax is harmonized with the federal GST into a single combined rate. You calculate one number, show one tax line, and file with the CRA rather than with a provincial agency.

Don’t assume the Maritimes share a rate

They used to line up more neatly than they do now. Nova Scotia reduced its provincial HST portion effective April 1, 2025, so Nova Scotia’s combined rate is now 14% while New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island remain at 15%. If you invoice across the region, a template with one hard-coded Maritime rate will now be wrong for one of those provinces.

Selling into New Brunswick from elsewhere

The place-of-supply rules decide the rate, and they look at where the supply is made rather than where your business sits. The CRA treats goods, services and real property differently, so it’s worth reading the rule that matches what you sell.

Working backwards

Divide a tax-included total by 1 plus the rate to recover the price before tax. Switch the calculator to Reverse and it does both halves at once.

Common questions

How do I calculate HST in New Brunswick?

Multiply the price before tax by 0.15. A $100 item comes to $115.

How do I find the HST inside a total?

Divide the total by 1.15 to get the price before tax. On a $115 total, the HST is $15.

Is New Brunswick's rate the same as Nova Scotia's?

No, not any more. Nova Scotia reduced its provincial portion on April 1, 2025, so it is now 14% while New Brunswick stays at 15%. Check each province separately.

Do I charge my own province's rate to a New Brunswick client?

Usually not. The rate generally follows where the supply is made. Services delivered to a New Brunswick client are typically taxed at New Brunswick's rate.
